This morning, I’m going to be working on creating target personas for a new client of ours. I realized this process may still be foreign to many business owners, so I took a few minutes to explain how to create them, and why it can be an important tool in your marketing strategy.

A target persona (also known as a buyer persona) is a fictionalized representation of your ideal customer. Creating a target persona can help your startup business better understand and communicate with your audience, and ultimately make more informed decisions about your product or service.

To create a target persona for your business or startup, you’ll want to look at the following steps:

  1. Define your target market: Who are you trying to reach with your product or service? Consider factors such as age, gender, location, income level, and interests.
  2. Conduct market research: Gather data on your target market through online research, surveys, interviews, and other methods. Look for patterns and common characteristics among your potential customers.
  3. Create a profile: Using the information you’ve gathered, create a detailed profile of your ideal customer. This should include demographic information as well as information about their goals, challenges, and pain points.
  4. Give your persona a name and a face: Assign a name and a face to your persona to help bring them to life. This can help you better visualize and relate to your ideal customer.
  5. Use your persona to guide your messaging: As you develop marketing materials, refer back to your target persona to ensure that your message is resonating with your audience.

Many times, startups are run by entrepreneurs that are solving a problem they themselves had. This makes the process much easier and a lot of fun, because your target customer is YOU. That means if you are feeling good vibes from your website, print design, and other marketing collateral, it has a good chance of being effective to your target audience as well.
